Ferrari 550 Maranello

The closest most will come to the new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta V-12 GT is walking past it in a hotel or restaurant parking lot or at a car show. We can't argue with the F12 Berlinetta's 730-hp 6.3-liter V-12 or its estimated 211-mph top speed, but Ferrari's war with Lamborghini really begins in a battle of perception and, compared to the last big front-engine rear-drive V-12 Ferrari supercar, we think the Italian automaker is off to a great start. We're taking a closer look at the new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, comparing its design against that of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and the Ferrari 550 Maranello. Check out the gallery below.

The straight-ahead view is not kind to the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, which appears cheerful and surprised, definitely lacking the menacing appeal present with the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. The new Ferrari's more angular headlights and larger grille give it an aggressive design that's more befitting the huge pricetag the car will wear. Then again, we'd be lying if we didn't mention that, for a brief moment, the F12 Berlinetta's front styling reminded us of contemporary Peugeots. Like the Ferrari 550 Maranello, the F12 Berlinetta returns to the central hood scoop design, yet with far more complex hood detailing. The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano has a more engaging door design and it seems the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta borrows little, stylistically, from its two predecessors in the profile view. Approached from behind, the 599 GTB Fiorano is the boldest thanks to the free-standing flying rear buttresses that help the car reach speeds just above 200 mph. The Ferrari 550 Maranello features the most classically beautiful rear view -- complete with four taillights instead of the two on the other cars -- and we're not yet sure what to make of the odd detailing on the F12 Berlinetta.

Inside, you won't find a gated manual transmission on the new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, which features a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Since the 550 Maranello stopped production, a Ferrari steering wheel carries far more controls than simply steering left and right. There's no navigation screen in the F12 Berlinetta's center stack design; instead, infotainment-related screens have moved to the gauge cluster.
